DEARLY BELOVED: We come together in the presence of God to witness and bless the joining together of a man and a woman in Holy Matrimony. The bond and covenant of marriage was established by God in creation, and our Lord Jesus Christ adorned this manner of life by his presence and first miracle at a wedding in Cana of Galilee. It signifies to us the mystery of the union between Christ and his Church, and Holy Scripture commends it to be honored among all people.
The union of husband and wife in heart, body, and mind is intended by God for their mutual joy; for the help and comfort given one another in prosperity and adversity; and, when it is God's will for the procreation of children and their nurture in the knowledge and love of the Lord. Therefore, marriage is not to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly, but reverently, deliberately, and in accordance with the purposes for which it was instituted by God.
Instructions for a Wedding at St. Timothy's
The Date of a Wedding
The date of a wedding must be set in consultation with the Rector. A preliminary meeting with the prospective bride and groom is necessary. Please contact us at least three months before the date you are considering for your wedding.
Pre-Marital Instructions
The Canon Law of the Episcopal Church requires that a priest (normally the one who officiates at the service) instruct the bride and groom as to the nature of the Christian marriage. The series of meetings must be arranged with the Rector prior to the wedding. At least one of the parties to the wedding must be a baptized Christian. If one or both of the persons to be married have been divorced, permission from the Bishop of Connecticut must be obtained. See the Rector for more information.
Music
The Organist/Choir Director, under the Rector, is in charge of the music and should be consulted at least four weeks prior to the wedding in order to arrange the music.
Flowers
Arrangements for flowers should be made in consultation with the office. Please have the florist read and sign the Florist Information and Agreement Form. Altar flowers for Saturday weddings are normally left at the altar for Sunday service the following day.
Pew Candles
Pew candles are available. It is the responsibility of the wedding party to arrange for installation and removal of the candleholders. Candles must be removed within two hours after the service.
Photographers
No flash photography is permitted during the wedding service. Photographers are not permitted in the center aisle. The photographer must read and sign the information and agreement form. Consult with the Rector for details.
Videographers
The camera must be set up and remain in one place which does not interfere in any way with the service. Videographers are not permitted in the center aisle. The videographer must read and sign the information and agreement form.
Nuptial Eucharist
The celebration of the Eucharist within the wedding service is, for many, very meaningful. The decision whether or not to have the Eucharist will be made in consultation with the Rector.
The Rehearsal
The Wedding rehearsal usually takes place in the late afternoon or early evening of the day prior to the wedding. It should be arranged well in advance with the Rector.
