Global Child Survival Act of 2007 (H.R. 2266)
Did you know that:
Each year on Earth over 10 million children die before the age of
five - nearly 30,000 every day - mostly from preventable or treatable
causes.
Malnutrition is an underlying cause of 53% of all child deaths
98% of these deaths occur in only 60 developing countries.
The scale of this tragedy is staggering. But, together, we can do
something about it!
Six million children each year could be saved with basic, cost-
effective measures such as: vaccines, antibiotics, insecticide-treated
bed nets, breastfeeding, micronutrients, and health and nutrition
education
We know what it takes to improve child health, but increased
resources are needed!
According to a study published in the UK medical journal The Lancet
(Vol. 365, June 25, 2005) $5.1bn of annual assistance is needed to
save these six million children each year. The U.S. share of this
commitment is $1.6bn, but our current annual spending for
international child and maternal health programs is only $360mm!
A bi-partisan group of members of the U.S. House of Representatives
(including our own Congressman, Christopher Shays) has joined together
to co-sponsor the Global Child Survival Act of 2007. The Act would
increase spending on development assistance for child survival to $600
million in 2008, $900 million in 2009, $1.2 billion in 2010, and reach
our goal of $1.6 billion in 2011.
So far the bill has 65 co-sponsors in the House and 15 in the Senate.
Let's let Congress know that, as a member of a "ONE" Episcopal
Congregation and as a concerned American citizen, you want to see this
bill become law!
